Handmade Valentines

What else is better than at home, handmade Valentines??? We used a few things from our craft scrap box, some cardstock, a sewing machine, and Voila!!! Valentines!

We've really loved all the paper sewn cards we've seen around etsy, but were a bit nervous to try it. Oh silly girls we were. They are so simple and they look so expensive!!! Here's a look at what you can make if you take about 30 minutes during naptime or before you go to bed:

Supplies {as always we recommend either stocking up on a few craft staples when they are on sale or using coupons whenever possible.}
- Felt {20 cents a sheet at Joanns} 60 cents
- Cardstock {$1.99 for a pack of 50 8x11 sheets with a 50% coupon at Joanns}
- Sewing machine

Total Cost for me: $2.59 which will make a ton of Valentines!!!

How to:

Cut out desired shape you'd like to sew onto your cards. You can do anything from a heart to the first letter of your Valentine's first name.

Cut your cardstock down to fit into an extra envelope you have lying around {I always have extras when I mess up writing cards!} You can do a postcard or a folded card.

Layer your shapes as you would like them to sit on your paper, you can add a bit of scrapbook adhesive if you'd like and then place on top of cardstock where you'd like to sew it.

Now, sew away! Go slow & don't forget to backstitch. I used contrasting thread for fun.

So, what do you think???
Simple, but sweet!

Felt Flower Wreath

In the spirit of Valentine's Day we thought we'd share a fun tutorial from Spunk!

----

I wanted a pretty Valentine's wreath to go in my kitchen. A friend sent me this wreath tutorial, so from there I developed  my own version. Feel free to use our tutorial or the other. I think it really depends on what you want. I personally didn't want to draw spirals, then cut out spirals. I'm all about the quick route these days! Anyways...on to my tutorial...

Valentine's Wreath Tutorial

Supplies:

{If you can go when supplies are on sale or use coupons, that's the best!}
Metal wreath ($2.49 at Hobby Lobby - 40% off coupon used)
Satin ribbon ($3.99 - 50% off at Hobby Lobby)
Sheer ribbon or tool ($4.99 - 50% off at Hobby Lobby)
24 pieces of felt in 4 colors - 6 per color (4 for $1 - $6 total)
Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Total cost (for me): Approximately $12

How-to:

Apply glue to satin ribbon and attach to wire wreath. Begin wrapping ribbon around at an angle.

Apply glue at every wrap. This will not only adhere it to the wire frame, but also prevent it from moving around on the frame.

When finished wrapping, tuck the end of the ribbon and glue on the back. Now your wreath base is done!

Next, lay out your felt by color. Take one piece of felt and fold it into 3s.

Cut the folded sides. Now you have three rectangles. Fold that in half and cut.

Now you should have 6 squares of felt. Repeat for all colors. Now all your squares are cut and you're ready to move on!

Take 1 square and fold it like a hot dog then a hamburger.

Trim from one corner to the other in a half circle.

Unfold and you have a half moon. Roll in one side.

Apply a small amount of glue along flower fold and bring the other side to meet it - press together to seal glue. This creates your flower.

Apply a small amount of glue to the wreath base and place your flower. Placing the flower seam side down will prevent future unraveling.

Now make more flowers and arrange them on the wreath base. My method was to do one to the right, one to the left and then one straight up in the middle.

This makes for pretty edges and good volume for your wreath. Also be sure to alternate colors so you don't get two of the same color next to one another. Place flowers all around your wreath until finished.

Take your tool or sheer ribbon and make a bow. {I took one long piece and tied it around the top - leaving the ends long. You will use them to secure the bow. Then I took another long piece and looped it back and forth. Pinch it in the middle and tie onto the wreath using the long pieces remaining.}

All done! Hang it up and enjoy :)
